Job description
Feed and water livestock, hand feed dairy calves, and monitor food, mineral blocks and water supplies. Clean feed and water troughs daily.
Herd livestock to pastures for grazing, milking or other enclosures.
Examine animals to detect illness, injury, or disease, and to check physical characteristics, such as rate of weight gain.
Provide medical treatment, such as administering medications, vaccinations, cleaning and medicating external cuts and bruises, or arrange for veterinarians to provide more extensive treatment
Mark livestock to identify ownership and grade, using brands, tags, paint, or tattoos.
Drive trucks, tractors, and other equipment to distribute feed to animals.
Segregate animals according to weight, age, color, and physical condition.
Inspect, maintain, and repair equipment, machinery, buildings, pens, yards, and fences. Aid in construction of farm buildings.
Move equipment, poultry, or livestock from one location to another, manually or using tractor or carts.
Clean pens and equipment, using cleaning solutions, brushes, shovels, water hoses, or pumps.
Mix feed, additives, and medicines in prescribed portions as directed.
Shift animals between grazing areas to ensure that they have sufficient access to food
Protect herds from predators using trained dogs.
Order food for animals, and arrange for its delivery.
Perform duties related to livestock reproduction and helping with animal births.
Check electric fencing daily. Clean underbrush, remove limbs, and repair fencing
Collect, inspect, and place eggs in incubators, wash, candle, and grade, and pack eggs in cartons.
Spray livestock with designated insecticides.
Milk animals such as cows by hand or using milking machine.
Special Requirements
In order to perform duties, it is preferred that workers be able to operate tractors and farm implements, have mechanical skills to perform routine repairs and maintenance on farm equipment. Welding experience is desired. The job entails working around farm machinery, a variety of farm animals as well as exposure to predators and snakes. Most duties are performed outdoors, and entail exposure to 30-to-100-degree weather, rain and other environmental conditions. Worker must be able to crouch, bend, lift and carry up to 100 pounds. The worker must be willing and able to occasionally work independently. Additional hours and split shifts may be needed. Workers may be requested to work on federal holidays, but it will not be a requirement.
