Job description

Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of greens, cabbage, sweet potatoes, strawberries, pecans, sweet corn, cantaloupe, watermelon, squash, cucumbers, southern peas, pinto beans, onions, potatoes, ornamentals, green beans, peaches, figs, blackberries, elderberries, muscadines, apples, and pears. The majority of the work activities during the overall contract period, however, will be related to general farm work and crop production. Worker will apply specific techniques as instructed by the employer in order to plant, feed, treat, cultivate, prune, harvest, and store crops/plants/trees/vines.
Duties related to general farm work may include the following responsibilities: maintain, drive, attach and operate farm implements/tractors/equipment to till soil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, and harvest crops; make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on farm machinery; remove undesirable and excess growth from crops or farm grounds; prepare fields, seed beds, containers, plastic growing beds, etc.; climb in and out of tall trucks and various truck beds and/or trailers; hand plant trees, vines, and/or plants in fields, greenhouses, orchards and/or containers; use tools to dig holes to plant young trees; sow seed and plant cuttings; mix planting soil; propagate plants; form bed with plastic and or drip tape installed; transplant crop into fields/ trays/grow beds; place/remove plastic mulch and drip tape; place/remove trunk and header lines in fields; cut weeds and grass around fields, storage buildings, and bunk house; remove blackberry blooms with Rosetta; cut/stack fire wood to heat greenhouse; establish, maintain, and grow crops in greenhouse; care for young non-producing fruit trees including weeding, hoeing, trunk painting, hand fertilizing and growth selection by hand and clipping; walk behind equipment to ensure plant placement (unclog planter if necessary); plant crops/transplants with machine or by hand; observe general condition and inspect crops/plants/trees for nutrient/moisture requirements and signs of disease/insect manifestations/worms/rot and apply appropriate care; remove dead plants and replace with seeds or live plants; use mechanized or hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning tools, shears, knives, saws, ladders, etc.; mix and/or spray chemicals such as herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable) by hand or machine; haul/spread soil/products/fertilizer/composted material to condition land; dig/rake and screen soil and fill cold frames/hot beds; move containerized plants/vines/trees; lift items such as rolls of plastic, bundles of wire, and rolls of drip tape overhead; build/install/maintain trellises; remove strings/wire from trellises or other structures; clear property; cut down trees; clear and burn roots and brush; start fans that circulate air or light smudge pots or torches to prevent frost damage; identify and remove product that is misshapen, damaged, or inferior; pollinate/prune/transplant/pinch plants/vines/trees and cull appropriately to ensure development of product; prune/thin plants/vines/trees using a variety of hand and/or mechanized pruning equipment; prune and thin from ground, ladder, or motorized platform; identify and remove stubs or broken branches, downward-growing branches, branches which rub against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood and shoots/suckers; train trees/vines to trellis, including clipping and tying limbs and shoots to wire; stake and tie plants/trees; train, position, prop, and tie tree limbs; replace/repair fencing; paint/repair/maintain farm structures/grounds; perform general clean-up of farm areas and worksites; dig with a shovel or machine; refurbish greenhouses by re-covering, moving structural braces, removing old ventilation system, adding sides that raise and lower, cleaning debris from floors,

Special Requirements

Applicants must have 1 month experience with the hand harvest of vegetables and must be able to bend and preform work at ground level. Company policy expressly forbids the use or possession of drugs/alcohol at the worksite or in employer-provided housing. Violation of this policy will result in immediate termination.
