Job description
The work is performed in the field on the farm:
The Van Driver is responsible for operating a 14-passenger vehicle to transport employees from employee housing to work site. Driver will drive to very specific routes and on very specific schedules depending on production needs. The role is responsible for adhering to transportation safety regulations and for safe vehicle maintenance. Once on site, the van driver will act in a leadership capacity to lead small groups in general labor or nursery tasks or supervise harvest activities.
Transportation
• Drive passenger over specified routes or to specified destinations according to time schedules.
• Follow safety procedures for vehicle operation and comply with traffic regulations to ensure passenger and vehicle safety.
• Ensure passengers are safely seated and follow safety practices while riding in the vehicle.
• Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort.
• Report delays and accidents immediately.
Crew Leadership
• Lead small group activities in nursery and general labor keeping work groups safe, productive and supplied with water, shade, and work tools
• Accounts for the employees via daily attendance tracking
• Collects the time of the employee and boxes harvested per person, through the management of a handheld device.
• Take instructions from a Sandy Ridge supervisor, the crew leader will then teach and supervise their work group
Be able to step into needed harvest labor positions including harvest crew leader, puncher, stacker or quality control
Vehicle Maintenance
• Inspect vehicle and check gas, oil, and water levels prior to departure.
• Report and coordinate minor repairs to vehicle and change tires.
• Follow all maintenance scheduled requirements.
Documentation
• Complete daily logs to document all passengers, mileage driven, vehicle inspection
• Submit weekly reports (or as needed) to comply with federal, state and local compliance.
• Use gas card, GPS and vehicle as specified by program
• Report all safety incidents to Sandy Ridge management
• Submit daily and accurate time card to Sandy Ridge
Other duties as assigned.
• Employee may assist in the quality inspection of fruit
• Employee may crew lead or assist the crew leader for harvest
• Employee may perform the duties of a stacker or quality inspector
• Employee may substitute fruit truck drivers in case of absences.
Additional Job Responsibilities:
Worker is responsible for following supervisor instructions. These include, completing daily warm-up exercises.
Special Requirements
Three months of Crew Leader experience in blackberries and/or blueberries. Cannot be color blind due to the need to distinguish colors of crops for proper ripeness and maturity. No smoking, illegal drugs, alcohol, or weapons of any sort in the housing or work fields. Proficiency in English or Spanish is required for training and safety purposes. Work is performed outdoors in open fields and can involve exposure to sun, wind, mud, dust, heat, cold and other elements of the normal field environment. Temperatures can range from 40 degrees F to over 90 degrees F during the period of employment. Workers should come prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear for the work and working conditions described. Must have attention to detail. Ability to understand and follow directions. A drivers license or ability to obtain a drivers license is required for this position.
