Job description
Tobacco Harvesting ( greenhouse - seeding, watering, mowing plants till ready to set them - setting - riding and following a four row setter in large fields- requires long periods of sitting, walking the rows, and loading trays of plants- chopping the rows of plants with garden hoes to remove the weeds between the plants and in the rows of the fields-topping- walking the rows and removing the top few inches of the tobacco plants them bloom and removing any suckers from the plants- cutting- using tobacco knives to cut plants and place into piles of 5 or 6 stalks, then placing those plants onto wooden sticks to be loaded onto wagons and hauled to large barns and hung inside on tear poles for the drying process- stripping process - removing the stalks from the sticks and tearing/pulling off the leaves from the stalks and placing into large burlap bags, according to their looks and colors into 2 or 3 grades- baling process - taking the bags of leaves and placing into large baling machines that compact the leaves into bales and labeling the bales by each grade of tobacco. workers will do various farm related jobs such as fencing, weed eating, mowing, working/feeding cattle, barn clean ups or repairs, hauling/moving hay, equipment/machinery repairs. Workers may also work or help with row cropping -planting and harvesting corn, beans, silage. Some workers but not all may drive farm machinery, hook up equipment to help with harvesting any or crops listed above. Lifting 50 to 60 lbs, climbing, walking, bending, and repeat movements are ALL requirements for farm laborer.
Special Requirements
Workers will be trained on each process of tobacco harvesting, so that they are familiar with equipment, that is provided, and that they understand each process.
