Job description

Worker must possess requisite physical strength and endurance to repeat the harvest process though out the workday, working quickly and skillfully to perform activities for which they were hired. Workers may not leave trash, or other discarded items in work areas or vehicles but must dispose of such items in provided receptacles. Workers must wash hands with soap and water after all bathroom and meal breaks. Allergies to varieties of ragweed, goldenrod, insecticides, related agricultural chemicals, etc., may affect workers ability to perform the work described herein. Workers should be physically able to do the work described with or without reasonable accommodation.

Sanitation Requirements: For food and general personal safety purposes, all workers will be required and expected to follow common sanitary practices at all times. This is particularly critical when hand harvesting crops for human consumption. Employees are required to cleanse their hands by washing them thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom and before entering the fields for harvest activities or the packing facility for packing operations.

Workers will work in teams during harvest work. Workers must coordinate with their fellow team members to ensure they work in conjunction with the truck or trailer. Workers working on piece rate must work in teams.

Cabbage: Workers may be required to plant cabbage plants. Worker cuts cabbage with a knife or may break off by hand according to size, color, shape and degree of maturity. Worker places cabbage in a container. Products will then be placed into sacks or boxes and placed on trailer for transport. Workers may grade products removing bad or damaged leaves and repack for shipment. Workers will be required to stay on their assigned row. Workers will work as a team and paid accordingly to the piece rate.

Harvesting Vegetables: Workers will bend and stoop to pick vegetables according to size, color, shape, and degree of maturity. Removing product from the vine will be done by hand so the vegetable is not bruised or scarred. Vegetable must be gently placed in field container. Worker must be careful that vines, trash, and field debris are not put in field containers. Workers may carry full container weighing approximately sixty (60) lbs. and gently place contents into large produce bins. Produce bins should be filled level full unless directed otherwise by the driver or supervisor. Workers are required to work in fields when plants are wet with dew or rain. Temperatures in fields during work hours can range from 32 to over 100 degrees.
• Harvest Pickles: Workers are expected to harvest pickles in crews of 9 people by filling buckets to dump on a long band which is immediately in front of them which in turn goes up to trucks that are to be filled with pickles to be driven to packing house which is onsite and subsequently weighed to determine piece work total for worker.
• Weed Pickle Fields: Workers will be assigned on a per acre basis field areas to pull weeds around the pickle plants on an as needed basis.
• Corn Harvest: Workers are expected to pull corn to fill crates on the field, which are then loaded on trucks to be driven to packing house onsite.
• Sod: Workers will plant cultivate and harvest Sod. Workers will work in groups of 4 to stack sod onto pallets.

Packing, & Grading Pickles: Workers may be required to perform various duties associated with packing and grading pickles. Workers may also be required to perform packing house cleanup.

During certain duties, workers may be required to work in teams to accomplish a certain task. When engaged in teamwork activities workers must coordinate with other members of the team to accomplish the task.

Special Requirements

All applicants must have at least 3 months experience hand harvesting a perishable crop. Applicants must be able to furnish affirmative job references from recent employers. Must be physically able to meet and perform all job specifications stated in job order. Must be able to work in the hot humid weather for extended periods of time. Workers are subject to random drug testing at no cost to the employee. All drug testing will occur after the worker begins his or her employment and is not a part of the interview process. Failing or refusing a drug test will result in immediate termination.
