Job description

WINTER CATTLE FEEDER

The Winter Cattle Feeders duties are specific to caring for livestock during winter months. The worker(s) will be required to herd and sort livestock; round up strays; protect and defend livestock from predators; drive trucks and other equipment to distribute feed to animals on the range; may need to do equipment and tire repair to keep equipment operating. Lift and carry hay bales weighing up to 100 pounds; physically break ice with shovel and/or spud bar in order to keep water supply open for livestock; ride horse and/or 4-wheeler to move cows to various pastures; must be able to handle a horse to ensure the safety of the worker, co-workers and livestock; feed and care for horses and other domestic animals; manually restrains animals when required; apply medication to cuts and bruises; spray livestock with insecticide; feed livestock supplementary rations and mineral blocks; and inspect and repair fences used to contain the livestock. The worker(s) will be required to shovel snow by hand and operate tractor with blade to move snow in order to keep areas open for movement of workers, equipment and livestock. The worker(s) are required to assist with calving (night shifts required), feed and attend to livestock in barns during calving. Herd livestock into corrals and stalls, assist with castration of livestock, sort and cut culls, and brand, tag, clip or otherwise identify animals; required to clean stalls, pens and ranch equipment and perform minor repairs and maintenance.

Must be willing and able to live and work independently in isolated areas for extended periods of time. Workers must be willing and able to perform tasks capably and efficiently without close supervision. Worker must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds. Most duties are performed out-of-doors and entail exposure to extreme cold; snow, and wind; and herding hazards. Must be self sufficient in a winter blizzard situation. feeding work will have to be done despite adverse winter conditions. General supervision will be provided by the ranch owner. Transportation will be provided between worker housing and the employers worksite at no charge to the worker. A means of communication will be provided at no cost to the workers for emergencies and general ranch communication. During times when the workers are located in an area where a cell signal is weak, the workers will be shown the area nearby where they can walk, drive or ride horse back to attain a cell signal.

A minimum of 3 months’ experience is required. Drivers' License is required for hauling feed and back hauls for feed trip
