Job description

Plugs, Flower, Herb and Vegetable: Cultivate and transplant vegetable, flower and herb seedlings and cuttings within a seedling line. Load and unload racks. Prepare soil and growth media. Plant, spray, weed, and water plants, using hand tools and gardening tools. Cut and transplant seedlings and cuttings. Feel plants leaves and note coloring to detect presence of insects or disease. Inspect plants and bud ties to assess quality. Move, load and unload greenhouse grown plants. Apply pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Push and pull carts. Work within an assembly line. Work is very fast paced during the busy season. Tag trays. Work on seedling line. Haul and spread fill-sand to maintain greenhouse floors, using wheelbarrows or carts and shovels. Operate tractors and machinery to fertilize, cultivate or spray. May maintain and repair nursery buildings. Sit down seed flats and get up seed flats for delivery. Fold and staple corrugated forms to make boxes used for packing horticultural products. Clean work areas, sanitize, and maintain grounds, greenhouses, warehouse, and landscaping. Perform nursery sanitation duties including picking up trash, cleaning bathrooms and sweeping floors. Workers who have a valid driver's license and doctor's certificate may drive vehicles to transport workers and may be offered additional hours. Drug and alcohol testing may be conducted post-hire at the employer's expense and is not part of the interview process. Workers subject to mandatory drug testing if they have been involved in a reportable accident or upon reasonable suspicion that drug use may be impacting job performance. Any drug test will be conducted at the employer's expense.

Flower Production: Transplanting small plants into pots or trays, sowing seeds, moving plants -setting down on floors or tables. Picking up plants to load on carts or wagons. Sticking, pinching, removing blooms or leaves from plants. Driving small tractors. Hanging pots or removing hanging baskets from elevated supports. General cleaning, weed removal, sweeping, washing equipment and facilities. Irrigating by hand, spraying, mixing fertilizers.

Vegetable Production: Transplanting, sowing seeds. Setting trays of plants down on to floors or raised benches. Picking up trays of plants to load upon rolling carts. Moving carts by hand or by driving electric or motorized tuggers/tractors. Sticking plant cuttings in soil. Cutting plants, pinching, trimming, grafting, discarding plants. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honeybees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Persons seeking employment in this position must be available for the entire period requested by the employer.

Special Requirements

Three months of verifiable agricultural work experience required. Perform prolonged sitting, walking, standing, bending, stooping, twisting, pushing and pulling. Work in extremely hot, cold and/or wet weather. Repetitively use hand and finger movements. Lift, carry and load up to 50 lbs. Must be 18 years of age or older.
