Job description
7-K has a winter calving operation. We will begin purchasing bred cows that are set to calve any time between November 15th and April 1st approximately. December will see all cows purchased and worked/processed to ensure optimal health, and employees will assist with moving them to appropriate corn stalk fields. In December, employees will be responsible for getting electric fence up around the corn fields that the mother and calves will be in. Calves that do come on the early side will be tagged/worked and paired backup mother cows to ensure health for both animals. The majority of the calves will come in January/February and the employees will focus primarily on ensuring calves and mother cows arrive safely. Employees will haul feed trailers to cows/calves. The later calves that come in March will stay with the mother cows for 65 more days while the earlier calves will be sold directly to area ranchers, and the mother cows are sold to local feedlot. By April 1st, less than 10% of the bred cows will remain to calve out. The majority will have been sold, therefore there will be only enough work for myself. Purchasing of bred cows for the next season will not commence until approximately September/October of the next year with a similar cycle anticipated.
