Job description
Seine ponds to harvest fingerlings (5-10 months old) and load on trucks for transport. (January-March).
Fill spawning ponds with water, eliminate aquatic weeds and check water quality (hardness, alkalinity, oxygen levels). Select broodfish: examine fish genitals to determine sex, move to the spawning ponds (March-April). Prepare spawning containers: clean, repair and place into brood ponds. Check the spawning containers (every 2-3 days) by feeling inside the container, remove spawn from containers, move to the hatchery, place into the hatching troughs (Mid-April mid-July). Monitor hatchery for water quality etc., clean hatching troughs, feed fry 12 to 18 times daily. Clean and disinfect hatching basket after use (Mid-April mid-July). Move fry to nursery ponds. Feed nursery ponds by hand and feeder multiple times per day (July- October). After spawning, remove spawning containers and consolidate brood fish to holding ponds. Prepare spawning ponds for next season: drain brood ponds to allow them to dry out by exposure to air for several months. (July-October) Monitor water temperature, quality and oxygen levels in all ponds (April-October) especially at night. Feed fingerlings and broodstock fish; For spawning success, a rule of thumb is to feed brood fish 2 days per week in spring and fall (March-May and August - October), 1 day per week in winter (November-February), and 3-4 days per week in summer (June-September). Maintain pond areas by removing weeds, grass, etc. Monitor ponds for disease and predatory birds.
(Jan. Oct.) 1st Shift: Mon. Fri. 6 am - 5 pm {Sat. Sun. 7 am 1 pm. (primarily feeding)}: Seining ponds, pond preparation, feeding fish, selecting brood fish, collecting spawn, hatchery care, pond maintenance, monitoring ponds
(May - October) 2nd Shift: Mon. Sun. 7 pm - 7 am; checking oxygen levels, water quality, there will be break periods
Special Requirements
Must be available for the entire contract period and able to perform all job duties. Must be able to work all shifts. Some heavy lifting (30 lbs.) Able to walk in 4-4 1/2 feet water. Work is outside in hot and cold weather. Extensive sitting, repetitive movements, pushing and pulling, walking, stooping. Hours of work may vary due to weather conditions and job duties.
