Job description
Flower nursery worker: Work in planting, greenhouse, bunching, packing, and logistics divisions. Job duties include stacking and unstacking crates, planting tulip bulbs, picking flowers by hand, cleaning, bunching or sleeving flowers, and folding boxes. May stack, unstack, lift, move and arrange empty, heavy-duty pallets. May perform minor repairs and maintenance on greenhouse, equipment and irrigation. May put up or take down greenhouse. Prolonged walking, standing, bending, stooping, and reaching. Workers may be requested to submit to random drug or alcohol tests at no cost to the worker. Failure to comply with the request or testing positive may result in immediate termination. All testing will occur post-hire and is not a part of the interview process. Negative result may be required post-hire and before commencing work. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Must not hinder another worker?s productivity. Use of personal cell phone or other personal electronic device during working hours strictly prohibited except for work-related calls or emergencies and violation may result in immediate termination. Though not a hiring requirement, if a worker drives a company vehicle during the period of employment then at the time of operating the company vehicle the driver must possess a valid driver?s license issued by a U.S. state or foreign equivalent and operate the company vehicle in accordance with the license restrictions and vehicle classifications applicable to that license. Three months verifiable prior nursery work experience (Horticultural Worker I) is preferred but not required due to the current prevailing practice among surveyed employers who do not use H-2A workers in the same or comparable occupations or crops in the area of intended employment. Must commit to work for the entire contract period.
Planting Division: Workers will move, carry and lift crates by hand. Plant tulip bulbs at a mechanical planting line. Workers may wash crates using crate washing machine. Must keep work area neat and clean at all times.
Greenhouse Division: Workers will perform forcing activity which involves unstacking crates of flowers and arranging crates of flowers on the greenhouse floor. May pick flowers by hand. May clean greenhouse using broom-shovel hand tool. Workers may wash crates using crate washing machine. Workers will stack and unstack crates used to grow flowers.
Bunching Division: Workers will make bouquets of flowers by hand. Workers will sleeve tulips. Workers may harvest/cut field peonies by hand with a small knife. Place flowers on conveyor belt. Must keep work area neat and clean at all times.
Packing Division: Workers will fold boxes in which flowers are shipped. Workers will sleeve flower bunches. Stack boxes of bunched flowers on pallet by hand and label for shipment.
Worker may drive pickup or van over the road. Worker may pick up workers from different housing sites or pick up points and take them to assigned work site, and at the end of the work day take them back to the housing site or pick up point. Driving is not a different job and the driver performs flower nursery worker duties when not driving. May make trips to grocery stores, laundromat, airport, governmental agencies, medical and dental offices. Employer assures that driver will be paid the offered wage rate for actual driving time, trips to the gas station, and time spent maintaining the vehicle.
All workers are required to follow common sanitary practices at all times. Workers are required to cleanse their hands by washing thoroughly with soap and water before commencing work and after each break. Smoking and the use of tobacco products prohibited during working time.
