Job description
Perform manual labor to plant, cultivate, harvest, grade and pack pecans. On-going farm maintenance including planting, pruning, and thinning pecan trees, harvesting hay, and assisting with cattle. Plant pecan trees, cultivate, graft and harvest pecans by hand and machine. Clean, pack and load harvested products. Ongoing orchard maintenance including pruning and thinning on ladders and lifts. Prune and thin each tree within an assigned row as shown by field supervisor. Limbs must not be torn from the tree; nor should limbs be completely stripped of leaves. Pick up old pecans in the field to be hauled off. Lift and carry buckets to spread fertilizer, keeping up, as tractor pulls fertilizer trailer through orchard. Haul fertilizer to young trees with wheel barrow. Remove unwanted weeds by hand in orchard. Plant pecan trees by hand while keeping up as trailer pulls young trees through orchard. Haul fertilizer and lime to young trees with wheelbarrow and buckets, keeping up as tractor pulls fertilizer trailer through orchard. Put garlic, soap, and wraps on young trees by hand. Collect and store graft wood. Pull pigweed and Johnson grass by hand. Remove unwanted weeds. Hand treat invasive weeds and trees with backpack sprayers and hand cut unwanted trees. Clean, grade, sort, weigh, sack, pack, and load harvested products. Haul dirt, asphalt, crushed concrete and miscellaneous materials to washes with wheelbarrow and/or dump trucks. Seed grass in washes. Put out rye grass by hand in washes. Harvest nuts by hand. Push pecan wagons by hand into storage. Pick up limbs, debris, and rocks. Put out bales of hay, dig trees and plant nuts. Harvest, cut, load and unload bales of hay. Plant grass. Herd livestock to pasture for grazing. Perform heat checks on cattle. Examine livestock to detect diseases and injuries, assist with herding livestock into corral and/or stall or manually restraining animal on the range and assist with vaccinations, castration, clipping identifying notches on or branding livestock, applying medicine to cuts and bruises and spray cattle with insecticide. Set up and move corrals. Load and unload feed sacks. Operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, and self-propelled machinery to harrow and fertilize soil, or to plant, cultivate, spray, sweep, shake, and harvest crops. Use hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, pruning scissors, pipe fitting, pipe wrenches, shears, pick axes, chain saws, weed eaters, hand trenchers, mowers, blowers, chippers, pipe fittings, pipe wrenches, paint brushes, paint scrapers, paint guns, irrigation tools, rakes, post hole diggers, sledge hammers and wheelbarrows. Apply lime, zinc, phosphorus, and magnesium. Till soil; transplant, weed, thin and prune crops. Collect leaf and soil samples. Construct trellis, repair fences and farm buildings. Paint and scrape old buildings. Inspect, repair and maintain farm vehicles, implements, mechanical equipment, cleaning plant, cleaning plant equipment. Place signs on equipment as instructed. Use wheel barrow to haul dirt, concrete and mulch to washes in the field. Identify plants, pests and weeds to determine the selection and application of pesticides and fertilizers. Apply fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. Record information about crops such as pesticides use, yields or costs. Worker may perform and participate in grading/irrigation activities. Set up, operate and maintain irrigation equipment and ditches, including checking valves. Mow and weed nursery and orchard. Use pick ax and shovel to make new irrigation ditches in the field/orchard. Work in groups to set up irrigation equipment, including carrying lines and putting in underground emitters. Use of 40 foot ladder and/or lift on pruning towers up to 40 feet to prune pecan trees. Workers who have a valid driver's license and doctor's certificate may drive vehicles to transport workers and may be offered additional hours.
Special Requirements
Most job duties require workers to work in extremely hot, cold and/or wet weather and perform prolonged standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and heavy lifting and carrying of up to 50 lbs. Use ladder or pruning towers up to 40 feet while pruning. Hazardous occupation. Employer is a drug-free workplace.
