Job description
This is a ranch of approximately 12,000 acres. The spring and summer are the busy seasons, running from February to October. The ranch runs 750 cows that are divided into 550 spring calving cows and 200 fall calving cows. The spring cows calve February-April and go to grass in June. The spring calves are weaned in October and sent to corn stalks in November. The fall cows calve in September and October. Spring and fall calving is our busy season. When cows are grazing on pastures/corn stalks in November, December and January we do not need any workers to assist with cattle. We also raise most of our own feed - 250 acres of irrigated farm ground and 200 acres of dry land farm ground. The ranch also has sub-irrigated hay meadows. Most of the irrigated ground is planted to corn for feed. Sorghum/Sudan grasses are planted in June and hayed around the first of October. Rye is then planted (in the fall) and either grazed or hayed in May. The sub-irrigated hay meadows are hayed in June and July. To maintain a ranch of this size there are miles of fence to keep up, cedar trees to cut, and many windmills to service (water source). Employee will operate tractors, feed wagon, mixer wagon, mowers, drills, and haying equipment/tools. Employee will handle livestock - branding calves, processing cattle, and inseminating heifers. Employee will assist with basic welding for equipment, summer irrigation, servicing windmills (must be able to climb up to 35ft), and fixing fence. Employee will complete other general farm duties as assigned. Employee will need to complete routine repairs and maintenance on equipment.
