Job description

At all times, the Farm Hand will: provide care for cattle; monitor the health of cattle to determine when changes to care are needed; monitor and manage the food and water supply to ensure cattle are adequately feed; make repairs to farm facilities including fences, shelters, feed troughs, and gates; assist with vaccination of cattle.

From January through April, the Farm Hand will: prepare cattle for the breeding season, carefully monitoring health and addressing any issues; undertake any needed repairs and maintenance to cattle facilities; enact pasture management and feeding program; make selection of replacement cattle; plant hay and silage; prepare cattle for sale.

From May through August, the Farm Hand will: support the breeding process and prepare for the calving process; make selection of replacement cattle; prepare cattle for sale; cut summer hay; monitor cows that will calf; assist in the delivery of cattle during calving; monitor the health of cattle and calves during and after the calving process; weigh and tag calves after they are born; assist with weaning, monitoring, and evaluating the calves; implement a fly control program; prepare cows for sale; ensure that all cattle remain safe and healthy throughout the hottest season in the area.

From September through October, the Farm Hand will: review the health and value cattle; finalize activities related to the sale of cattle; prepare cows for artificial Insemination and embryo transfer; prepare for fall calving season by ensuring enough bedding space for cows that will calve in cooler temperatures; focus on animal care to ensure cattle remain healthy approaching the breeding season; undertake any needed repairs and maintenance to cattle facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of our cattle; cut and harvest haylage to ensure sufficient food for the cattle in early spring months; synchronize cattle for upcoming breeding season; manage pasture.
