Job description
Manually plant, cultivate, and harvest vegetables. Use hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, shears, and knives. Duties may include the following: weeding, applying fertilizers transplanting, thinning crops, cleaning crops with water, packing and loading harvested products. Weeding and thinning will only be done with a long-handled hoe, never a short-handled tool. No hand weeding, hand thinning or hot capping is needed or necessary. May construct trellises, repair fences and farm buildings, and/or participate in irrigation activities.
Instruction, training and general supervision will be provided by the farm operator or a designated employee. However, the worker must perform required duties without close supervision and listen to, understand and follow simple instructions of the employer or supervisor. Most duties are performed out of doors and entail exposure to heat, cold, dust, rain and other environmental conditions common in fields, including mosquitoes, flies during certain seasons. Worker must crouch, bend, lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds in the course of performing required activities.
The types of crops are peas, parsnips, tomatoes, squash and peppers.
The workers will work from 7am to 3:30pm with a 30-minute lunch break beginning at 12pm.
Special Requirements
Workers must be able to distinguish colors of crops for proper ripeness and maturity, no smoking, illegal drugs, or alcohol. Workers must be able to follow safety precautions provided, good hygienic practices, and verbal instructions provided. Working outdoors in open fields means being exposed to sun, wind, mud, dust, heat, and cold, so workers should be prepared for working conditions with appropriate clothing.
