Nursery Worker

Job description

Crops/Commodities:
nursery stock.
Weeding:
Workers will remove weeds by use of hoe/pickaxe from the walk-way and remove all weeds growing around plants by hand. Workers will remove weeds from the growing area by raking piles of debris and dispose of it as directed by the farm manager and/or crew supervisor.

General Farm Labor:
Some of the work required from the worker to be performed that is incidental to farming crops listed in this application may be described as performing hand cultivation duties, weeding or hoeing crops, cleaning, repairing seed beds and racks, setting up and moving irrigation pipes and equipment. Tasks the worker must be able to perform include: apply mulch by row mulcher or by hand, beds, rice hull containers; apply ground cover to beds using machine or by hand or in container area; remove debris from bed preparation process to clean growing area; finish row ends with shovels provided by employer; unload plants by hand from trucks or trailers and move plants to planting location by hand; assist in pest controls; install culverts for field drainage or in container area; remove and reinstall sprinklers during bed preparation, re-plant missing or unhealthy plants as directed; remove blossoms (de-blossom_ to improve quality, remove debris, boxes, and discarded plants from fields to keep clean growing areas; general ranch maintenance; basic irrigation maintenance; make and place sandbags; clean and maintenance equipment and tools, assist in equipment cleaning, assist in applications by hand or tractor of fertilizers and/or pesticides; frost control of sprinklers, frost blanket coverings, or hoop coverings of beds, greenhouse, sandbags or low cover frames. Worker may also be required to perform the following duties: tilling mixing potting soil, level land, bed rows, lay/pull drip, connect/disconnect drip, patch/repair plastic, cut and tuck ends of plastic, put poly along baseboard of houses/microfoam/fleece pull/burn plastic, shovel work/spade digging, digging/cleaning ditches, set/fix rain birds, punch holes, set vegetables, transplanting cut runners, trim leaves (bushes), trees/limbs, thinning/pruning crops, chopping/twisting plants, pick up/burn trash, lay ground cover, pull grass/dig grasses from beds, DIV for cont or prop, operate plastic machine (during plastic application), load and unload plastic and drip rolls onto plastic machine, put in drain pipes, paint, mow, make/assemble boxes and racks for bare root, clean (equipment and/or facilities), operate equipment, load and unload vehicles. May be necessary to assist in the use of farm equipment such as tractors, trucks and harvest machinery, etc. pulling plant material (BM); tagging/labeling of plant material (BM); load onto truck/tractor/pallets (BM).

Container Tree Maintenance Laborer:
Perform manual and/or machine tasks associated with the cultivation and maintenance of container horticulture trees 3+ gallons from a 60's flat and up. Maintenance of trees including pruning, staking, lifting, tape gun and straightening of trees and maintenance of holding systems. Application of fertilizers and use of earth moving equipment, and tools and gas-powered equipment. Maintaining the work area clear of any litter and keeping tools and supplies in good working order. Operate equipment according to safety guidelines (ex. Tractors, high reach, elevating platforms, pruning tractors, skid steer, unloader, reticulating tractors). Maintain holding systems (ex. Ropes, trellis, rebar, and pipes). Utilize various hand tools and small engine gas powered equipment. Work on ladders. Lift and straighten large container trees. Maintain constant shapes between container sizes when pruning. Sanitize equipment between trees when pruning. Stake trees with bamboo, pvd or metal using proper protocols. Use tie tape for staking bamboo to trunk and tying leaders of trees. Apply top-dress and sub-dress dibble fertilizer to containers by hand and mechanically.

Special Requirements

This job requires a minimum of 3 months of agricultural experience handling both manual and mechanized tasks. Applicants must be able to furnish verbal or written statement establishing relevant prior work experience. Saturday work required. Must be able to lift/carry 75 lbs. Employer-paid pre-employment and post-hire drug testing required. Criminal background check required.
