Job description

Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of nursery stock, such as trees, shrubs, and perennials. The majority of the work activities during the overall contract period, however, will be related to general nursery work/irrigation/crop production.
General Farm/Nursery Work will include the following responsibilities: maintain, drive, attach, and operate farm implements/tractors/equipment to till soil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, and harvest crops; make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on farm machinery; may mix and/or spray chemicals (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable); remove undesirable and excess growth from crops or farm/nursery grounds; remove rocks from field; paint/repair/maintain farm/nursery structures and grounds; replace/repair fencing; perform general cleanup of farm/nursery areas; drive, load/unload trucks or trailers; operate vehicle, motor bike, or all-terrain vehicle in the course of performing duties; recognize disease and/or nutrient/moisture requirements by plant texture/development or soil condition; observe general condition of plants and apply the appropriate care; mix planting soil; pollinate/prune/transplant/pinch plants and cull appropriately to ensure development of product; propagate plants; harvest, sort, pack, and store crop; gather crop by hand; haul and spread soil/products to condition land; dig/rake and screen soil and fill cold frames/hot beds; fill growing tanks with water; sow grass seed and/or plant plugs of sod; mow/tend sod; trap/poison pests; plant shrubs/plants in containers; prepare flowers/plants/shrubs/trees to fill orders; move containerized trees/shrubs/plants; dig/wrap roots of shrubs/trees; prepare crops for shipment; prepare boxes for packing products; care for young non-producing fruit trees including weeding, hoeing, trunk painting, hand fertilizing and growth selection by hand and clipping; hand thin trees to ensure proper fruit load on tree; pruning and thinning from the ground or a ladder up to 12 feet in height or from a motorized platform; identify and remove stubs or broken branches, downward-growing branches, branches which rub against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood and shoots/suckers with hand pruning saws and clippers and mechanized equipment; train trees to trellis, including clipping and tying limbs and shoots to wire; train and position tree limbs; prop and tie tree limbs; care for trees during growing process; pick up/handle/climb ladders; clear property; plant trees/shrubs/perennials; build trellises; spread composted material; clean fields after harvest; hand pick crop; pick or cut crop from plant, soil, stem, or root; place crop in buckets or bags; hand thin plants; identify and remove fruit that is misshapen, damaged or inferior; prune trees using a variety of pruning equipment including hand shears, hand loppers, hand saws, and 12-foot ladders; recognize tree disease such as blighted branches in apples and gummosis in cherries;

Special Requirements

Applicants must have 20 days experience with nursery/irrigation work, be able to operate agricultural equipment, and provide the contact information of at least one reference who can verify experience and performance. Applicants hired must be able to obtain a valid drivers license as driving on public roads may be required. To meet minimum acceptable performance standards when irrigating, the worker must, after a 10 day conditioning period, move an average of at least 48 40-foot sections of 3-inch pipe or 44 40-foot sections of 4-inch pipe per hour under normal working conditions.
