Job description

Shifts are 8 hours per day (Monday-Friday), with a one-hour lunch. Shifts are 5 hours on Saturday. Workers will plant, cultivate and harvest sugarcane and soybeans by hand or machine. Workers may operate a tractor and/or combine and use hand tools, such as shovels and hoes. Workers will ride, walk, stoop, or kneel in planting sugarcane by hand. Workers will transplant and weed crops, till soil, and apply fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. Other duties: Clean grain bins; Haul soybeans to elevator; Construct trellises, repair fences and farm buildings; Set up and operate irrigation equipment; Operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, and self-propelled machinery to plow, harrow and fertilize soil, or to plant, cultivate, spray and harvest crops. Repair and perform minor maintenance to farm vehicles, implements and mechanical equipment. Inform farmer or farm managers of crop progress. Identify plants, pests and weeds. Clear and maintain irrigation ditches. Record information about crops, such as yields or costs. Workers who have a valid driver's license and doctor's certificate may drive transportation vehicles to transport workers and may be offered additional hours. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honeybees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Once hired, workers may be required to take a random drug test at no cost. Failure to pass test may result in immediate termination. Possible work hours may vary (be more or less) due to weather conditions or mechanical breakdowns, but will not reduce the 3/4 guarantee over the life of the contract. Work tools, supplies and equipment provided at no cost. Housing provided for workers at no cost for workers who cannot reasonably return to permanent residence at end of workday.

Special Requirements

Three months' experience working on a farm. Perform prolonged bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, walking, sitting, stooping and kneeling; lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. Required to work outside in extremely hot, cold, and/or wet weather. Must be 21 or older.
