Job description
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
The duties described herein (and/or related duties) constitute or are closely and directly related to lamb and wool production on the open range. Employee will help with shearing, lambing, and delivering lambs and wool to market. Will work with horses to train and direct ewes back to lambs; will maintain ewes and lambs in small groups until lambs are mature. Employee will shoe horses; assist in docking, vaccinating, drenching, and medicating sheep and building and removing portable corrals. Will assist with lambing in barns and on open range; may examine animals for signs of illness/injury and apply medication/treatment; may brand, tag, clip, or mark sheep; may sort and cut culls. Sheep will be sheared in the month of April in the open range utilizing portable facilities. These facilities (corrals) need to be loaded, unloaded, assembled, and disassembled. Wool will be loaded and put in storage. The wool will then be tested and reloaded onto commercial transportation. May repair/construct fences and assist in distribution of salt. May assist with water pipeline delivery systems using related equipment to control water supply to ensure sheep do not become trapped in mud and have adequate water supply. Assist with shipping of the lambs in the fall, help protect against predators. Will tend groups of sheep totaling approximately 5000 ewes and 7000 lambs. Must be willing to work in remote areas, either in crews or alone, under climatic conditions common in SW Wyoming.
Special Requirements
Three months prior experience as a Lamb and Wool Open Range Sheepherder, as described in this Job Order, and one satisfactory reference are required. (If the worker's experience as a sheepherder has not been in the immediately preceding 12 months, up to two references will be required.)
