Job description

Farm Laborer: Viburnum picker, Ilex, Roses, Snowberries picker and planter, and Cotinus picker to perform the following duties:

Viburnum and Cotinus Picker manually pick in fields.

Duties:

1. Picks into picking crates, making certain that they are at the proper stage and separating different stages (such as perfect, puffy and short).
2. Ensures that picked meet TSVG quality standards and have straight leaves with bulbs and a fixed amount per picking crate.
3. Picks with a goal of 1800 stems per hour.

Ilex, Roses, Snowberries planter and picker. Duties:

1. Plants bulbs upside down, bulb base upwards in designated number of rows.
2. Checks quality of the bulbs before planting.
3. Ensures that all the designated holes are filled.
4. Checks for the proper placement of the bulbs (bulb bases facing upwards) to ensure straight planting and makes adjustments to the bulbs as necessary.
6. Maintain a safe and clean work area.
7. Picks flowers into picking crates, making certain that they are at the proper stage and separating different stages (such as perfect, puffy and short).
8. Ensures that picked flowers meet TSVG quality standards and have straight leaves with bulbs and a fixed amount per picking crate.

Additional job duties:

Crate moving, dumping and washing
Drip tape irrigation
Crop tending
Hand dumping
Leaf tipping
Pesticide spraying

CalVan Driver-

1. Driver may drive over the road in passenger vans.
2. Driver will drive designated vans to transport harvest crew workers to grocery store, bank and laundry. Driving job duty is not a different job and the drivers perform harvesting job duties when not driving.
3. Driver will be responsible for filling van with fuel and keeping vehicle clean.
4. Driver will be required to complete and process periodic driving reports as required by state laws.
5. Driver will be required to follow all traffic laws and if applicable, vanpool rules.
6. In order to drive, drivers must possess a valid authorized driver’s license and must be able to pass DOT (Department of Transportation) recognized medical exam and fulfill all other DOT requirements.
7. CalVans performs the medical exam at no cost to the employee or employer. The employer will be responsible for the cost of the registration as an FLCE driver (if any).

Drivers are compensated for these activities.
All employees engaged in driving activities (H-2A as well as corresponding domestic workers), will be given the opportunity to obtain a driver’s license or commercial driver’s license (DL or CDL) on a voluntary basis. The DL/CDL is not a pre-hire job requirement. No job applicant will be denied an employment opportunity due to a lack of a DL/CDL or FLCE Certificate at the time of application and/or hiring. Further, no worker (H-2A or corresponding domestic worker) will be terminated for failure to obtain a DL/CDL or FLCE certificate.

Workers may occasionally and/or sporadically perform duties associated with and directly related to the primary duties. Such work will be temporary and unsubstantial agricultural labor.

Special Requirements

1 month of flower harvest experience. Cannot be color blind due to the need to distinguish colors of crops for proper ripeness and maturity, able to use shears, clippers and other agricultural tools, no smoking, illegal drugs, alcohol, or weapons of any sort in the housing or work fields. Ability to communicate in English or Spanish is required for training and safety purposes. Work is performed outdoors in open fields and can involve exposure to sun, wind, mud, dust, heat, cold and other elements of the normal field environment. Temperatures can range from 20 degrees F to over 100 degrees F during the period of employment. Workers should come prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear for the work and working conditions described.
