Job description
Tobacco Harvesting- setting tobacco- riding and following 4 row setter in large fields- requires long periods of sitting, walking and loading trays of plants. chopping the rows of plants with garden hoes to remove weeds between the plants and in the rows of the fields. topping- walking the rows and removing the top few inches of the tobacco plants that have bloomed and removing any sucker leaves from plants. cutting- using tobacco knives to cut plants and placing them into piles of 5 stalks, then placing plants onto sticks to be loaded onto wagons and hauled to barns and hung inside on tear poles for drying. stripping -removing the stalks from the sticks and tearing/pulling off the leaves from the stalks and placing them in burlap bags, according to looks and color. baling- taking bags of leaves and placing into large baling machines that compact it into 500 pound bales and labeling them for shipping Men may do odd jobs of fencing, weed eating, mowing, cleaning equipment at different times of the year. All tobacco supplies/equipment (knives, sticks spikes, weed eater, etc.) will be provided by employer at no charge to workers.
Special Requirements
I will train the workers myself, to learn the various processes of harvesting tobacco, to get shown how to use equipment the right way (knives, spikes, fencing tools, weed eaters) or to answer any questions the workers may have.
