Job description
GENERAL FARM LABOR: Workers will conduct various field clean-up tasks which include picking up garbage, rocks, brush, rubber bands, plastic and other items on farm property. Workers will be required to move irrigation pipes weighing up to 60 lbs. Worker will be required to sanitize knives daily. Worker will be required to hoe or pull weeds and conduct various pruning activities as directed by supervisor. Workers will top beets, celery root, turnips, parsnips, carrots and radishes by pulling crop out of ground and either use a knife to cut the top/head off of crops or use hands to snap tops off. Workers will then take removed tops and place them into instructed containers. Workers will engage in transplanting activities which require workers to load wagons with plant flats, then either ride on transplant machine or follow behind machine. Workers will empty trays at the end of assigned field and reload empty trays onto the machine. Workers will then unload trays into an empty pallet bin at the barn.
DRIVING: If worker is eligible to drive under Michigan law and provides proof of no infractions from official source, Employer may require worker to drive to and from worksite and to locations within 60 miles as directed. To be eligible for driving job, worker must understand and agree to driving rules, as outlined in work rules below.
TRANSPORTING PRODUCT: Employer may require worker to transport only Employer's product to Detroit Market as instructed by supervisor/Employer. Worker will help load and unload Employer's product at Market from Employer vehicle and onto buyer's vehicles as directed by supervisor/Employer. Worker will be required to prepare orders for transport as instructed by supervisor.
TRACTOR/FORKLIFT DRIVING: Worker may be required to drive tractor to/from work sites as instructed by supervisor. Tractor driving may include additional attachments that assist with planting, harvesting, maintaining, cleaning, cultivating, transporting or transplanting. Worker will be required to operate a forklift to load, unload and move product as instructed by supervisor. Worker may operate grading and digging equipment. Worker may mix specified materials and chemicals, and dump solutions, powders, and seeds into planter and sanitation equipment.
Pay will be hourly.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE: Workers will conduct various farm maintenance and field clean up tasks such as raking/clearing brush, picking up rocks and roots, and mowing grass, on farm as directed. Worker will repair, clean and sanitize harvest buckets, bags, bins, and equipment as instructed.
Pay will be hourly.
FARM EQUIPMENT CARE: Worker will be responsible for general repairs and maintenance of farm equipment and irrigation on the farm. Worker will repair farm equipment using shop tools such as a torch, power saw, air impact, and wrench.
Pay will be hourly.
BUILDING/REPAIRING ANIMAL BARRIER FENCING: Worker will dig and clean out holes to set wooden fencing posts, either by hand or using tractor mounted post-hole digger, to the required depth. Worker will set posts in hole and level as another worker fills and tamps around post until hole is full and post is solid. Worker will unroll fencing material and attach to posts with nails, screws or wire as needed and as directed by supervisor with provided tools. Worker may install electric fence posts and electric wire, and other animal scare devices or animal barriers. Worker may also have to install metal fence posts using a 20-pound hand-driver to pound posts in to ground. Worker may be required to lift up to 60 pounds of fencing material.
Pay will be hourly.
Special Requirements
Job requires worker to complete tasks in general farm labor and hand harvest and packing of beets, carrots, parsley, parsley root, parsnips, cilantro, mint, radish, dill, spinach, cabbage, leeks, celery root, and turnips.
Experience Requirement: 3 verifiable months commercial vegetable hand harvest experience required. Applicants must furnish job references from employers of the last 3 years establishing acceptable prior experience.
