Job description

Workers are required to work inside structures & outside in various weather conditions/temperatures. Workers may propagate, set, cut, house, and strip tobacco. Will chop out weeds with hoe, remove tops & suckers from plants.
Workers will use tobacco knife to cut ripe plants off at ground level and spear tobacco stalk over metal spear onto 48” wooden stick. Approximately (6) plants per stick are speared making loaded stick weigh approx 50 lbs. Plants reach height of (7) feet tall. Workers will move loaded sticks from ground to wagon/trailer & transfer to barn. Will hand to workers standing on rails in barn. Workers must stand on rails up to 48” apart & (6) feet from ground. Will transfer loaded stick over his head to worker on rail at next level. Worker on top rail will hang stick, separating plants for air-curing tobacco. Must prevent bruising/breaking of plants. Per production standards, workers are required to cut & hang 50 sticks of tobacco per hour. When applicable, workers will strip leaves from stalk and place in bins by grade per supervisors instruction. Will load / unload trucks, clean equipment and work areas. May work with irrigation equipment, cultivate and fertilize soil and crops. May perform miscellaneous duties such as harvest of hay/straw, rake pine straw, clear/repair fence rows, clean/repair farm buildings, dig ditches, cut firewood, feed farm animals, and other farm activities. Must be able to operate farm equipment such as tractors, posthole drivers, smaller power tools and hand tools. Will perform year end cleanup which includes removing plastic mulch, old leftover crops, and other debris / items left in fields, any other necessary duty.
