Job description

Greenhouse Care Workers may but not limited to: Plant, spray, weed, fertilize and water plants. Regulate greenhouse conditions. Load and transport trays of tobacco plants. Operate machinery and equipment in order to seed and grow plants. Clean work areas, equipment and maintain grounds. Setting Tobacco Workers may but not limited to: Load and transport trays of tobacco plants to field: Ride on setting machine and either set plants in prepared holes in ground or drop plants through setting machine carousel: Walk behind setting machine and tamp ground around newly transplanted plants. Cutting Tobacco Workers will but not limited to: Cut ripe plants off at the ground using a tobacco knife and spear stalk over a metal spear on to wooden stick (stick is about 48" long, one end is stuck in ground and the spear is placed on the other end): Transfer the loaded stick from ground to wagon or trailer and load sticks on the wagon of trailer in an orderly fashion. Industry standard is six (6) plants per stick (stick & plants may weigh up to 80 pounds & tobacco plant may be 7 feet tall).Housing Tobacco Workers will but not limited to: Transfer stick from wagon or trailer to other workers standing on rails in the tobacco barn. Workers standing on the rails will either hang tobacco between rails or transfer tobacco to workers standing on the rails above them (rails are 48" apart & from 6ft. To 40 feet above the ground). Cut wood and carry into barn to fire the tobacco. Wooden slabs are used to fire tobacco for desire colored. Remove ashes after the tobacco is fired. Stripping Tobacco Workers will: Remove tobacco from rails in barn and transport tobacco to stripping room; Pull leaves from plant stalks by hand and place in baling machine; Operate controls of a baling machine and may be required to bail tobacco by quality grades. Other Related Duties Workers may chop weeds between plants with a hoe; remove tops and suckers from plants and apply side dressing. Alternative Work General farm maintenance and other duties as required in the farming operation maintenance. Includes but not limited to: preparing barns, draining fields, preparing land for planting, dropping sticks in field, mowing grass, weed eat around buildings, and other repair and maintenance of any property that is owned or leased by Bobby G. Holloway, as well as maintenance of tools and equipment and other work that is directly related to growing tobacco or the crop and activities for which the worker was hired. Such work will be offered when climate or crop conditions preclude working in the primary activities stated above.

Special Requirements

Work will begin at an assigned time shortly after daylight and could continue until after dark. Worker may be required to work in the fields when tobacco leaves are wet with dew or rain and should have suitable clothing for conditions which include light rain and temperatures ranging from 60 degrees to more than 100 degrees. Workers should be able to stand, bend, stoop, walk and lift 60-80 lbs and up to 40 feet high for prolonged periods of time and must be physically fit and able to perform the duties as described. Employees may be required to take random drug and/or alcohol tests at no cost to the worker. Testing positive or failure to comply may result in immediate termination from employment. All testing will occur after employment has started and is not a part of the interview process. Workers may be required to submit a criminal background check at no cost to the worker.
