Job description

Duties may vary from time to time. Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Planting/Harvesting Strawberries and Raspberries. Pick and sort berries by hand. Grade accordingly to supervisor’s instructions making sure to discard defective fruit. Gently remove fruit from branches and vines making sure not to damage. Fruit pickers are expected to work quickly and efficiently. Strawberries/Raspberries: Grow on low-lying plants; worker must have the endurance and strength to bend over for a long period. You will need to kneel for a long period collecting the strawberries, once you have removed fruit from the plant you will need to place them in a strawberry pint or clamshell carefully so no injury may occur to them. Fruit pickers must be detail-oriented, fast and reliable so they can remove fruit without loss. Prune strawberry bushes by hand using pruning shears and loppers. Remove debris from fields using hoes, shovels, baskets, etc. Fruit harvesters must carefully, yet quickly, inspect fruit and bushes for signs of disease, insect manifestations, worms, rot and remove or replace bushes as directed by the farm manager. Each worker must pick the plants clean of all ripe fruit. It is the picker's responsibility to sort good product from contaminated or rotting fruit to ensure that all produce will be routed to appropriate facilities for cleaning and distribution. Chop off, pull up, or twist off strawberry plants in preparation for the next crop. Remove blossoms to improve fruit quality. Duties may also include tilling soil, transplanting, pulling weeds, raking, thinning or pruning crops, cleaning/grading/packing harvested products, and cleaning around shed area. May repair fences and farm buildings and participate in irrigation activities. Workers with driver license may be asked to drive workers from/to housing, worksite, grocery store and other errands.

Special Requirements

Three (3) months experience in planting, cultivating, and hand-picking berries. A valid Drivers' License is required to transport workers to fields and grocery store. The company may conduct criminal background checks on all new applicants for employment. Workers should come prepared wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for the environmental and working conditions described. Cell phone can only be used during breaks, emergencies, and communicated with supervisor when needed. Lifting requirement may have a range of 5 - 50 lbs. All tools, supplies and equipment will be provided at no cost to workers. Most of the workday is spent in agricultural fields and involves exposure to sun, wind, rain, soil, mud, dust, heat, cold, humidity, and other natural elements. Workers may stand in one place for long periods of time and must be able to climb, stand, sit, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, bend (from the waist), push, pull, reach, and lift while performing their required job duties.
