Job description

Work in fields and barns/ curing structures, performing manual and machine tasks associated with tobacco and hay/straw production. Plant, cultivate and harvest tobacco. Set up plants after storms. Chop and top tobacco plants. Cut and lay plants on ground, pick up plants, hand plants to spears, spear plants onto lath, load into wagon. Pass lath progressively upwards in barn and hang lath onto poles, standing at considerable height. Tend charcoal/gas fires. After curing, take down tobacco and strip/bundle leaves for market. Take care to prevent damaging plants at all stages to ensure wrapper quality product.
Install/ maintain irrigation systems and water lines. Move and install irrigation pipes and equipment. Dig and maintain ditches. Install and remove levee gates. Perform ditching, shoveling, hoeing, hauling, ground preparation, and other manual tasks. Use of hand tools such as but not limited to shovels, trowels, hoes, shears, clippers, loppers, saws, and knives. Use power equipment including but not limited to tractors, planters, mowers, plows, sprayers, cultivators, power shears, chain saws, high lifts, fork lifts, skid loaders. Must operate agricultural equipment safely, with/without direction. Cleaning, repairing and maintaining farm buildings and fences. Mow, cut, weed, bale, stack and load hay.
Carrying and lifting up to 50lbs at heights of 5 feet. Work requires working on rails in barn/ curing structures which are 48 inches apart and from 6ft to 20 ft above the ground. Workers must have no fear of heights. This is hard manual labor- workers should be physically able to do the work with or without reasonable accommodations. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides or related chemicals may affect a workers ability to perform the job.
Must be able to climb and hang tobacco, inside tobacco sheds at heights over 20 ft. Work is outside and in adverse weather conditions from cold and hot temperatures. Bending, stooping, lifting and walking for long periods of time. Two month experience in work listed required.

Special Requirements

Exposure to extreme temp, lifting 50 lbs, repetitive movements, extensive pushing and pulling, extensive walking, frequent stooping.
