Job description
Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. The employer will provide the tools necessary to perform the described job duties, at no charge to the worker. Some activities will be done while working in a 32-36 degree (F) cold storage room and working in a potentially damp climate. Workers will perform general tasks associated with orchard production that include but are not limited to: using marked shovels to place chipped ice into cherry tanks, using hand jacks to lift and maneuver plastic bins in a storage room to ice cherry tanks, remove wooden or plastic cherry tank covers to skim/ice and place back on tanks for shipping, identifying marked shovels used for ice and maintenance shovels used for cleaning, using tennis rackets or hands to remove sticks and leaves from cherry tanks full of fruit and water, cleaning/picking up/sanitizing fruit storage rooms from debris and spilled water from cherry tanks, sort bins, remove old tags and repair bins. Cleaning and maintenance of fields and equipment. Use hand tools including but not limited to: pruners, shovels, and hoes. Take care to prevent damage to produce and trees. Tree training: hoeing and tree painting. Tie/position trees and limbs together and to trellises, using string, tape, wire, or other fasteners and supports. Thinning: hand thin to control the size and quality of fruit. Remove fruit blossom, bud and/or identifiable fruit from within a cluster of other fruits. Must accurately identify and remove misshapen, damaged, or otherwise unmarketable fruit. Pruning: hand pruning based on fruit variety. Use manual and mechanized pruning tools and equipment. Identify and remove stubs or broken branches, downward growing branches, branches rubbing against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood and shootsuckers.
Special Requirements
This type of work involves working conditions that require tremendous stamina and a high level of physical activity in cold or extremely hot conditions in direct sunlight and in adverse weather conditions such as rain or snow. Workers must be on their feet in bent positions for long periods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Workers may be required to work in occasional showers not severe enough to stop field operations. Due to the type of work involved, there is a probationary period of five (5) days beginning with the first day of employment, to show possession of the required physical endurance to perform this type of work. Employer reserves the right to discharge an obviously unqualified worker, malingerer or recalcitrant worker who is physically able but is unwilling to perform the work necessary or for any other lawful reason.
