Job description
Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of grass hay, alfalfa, wheat, grain hay, various varieties of produce (including melons and berries), flowers, and livestock (cattle and chickens). The majority of the work activities during the overall contract period, however, will be related to general farm work/irrigation/crop production.
General Farm Work will include the following responsibilities: maintain, drive, attach, and operate farm implements/tractors/equipment to till soil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, and harvest crops; make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on farm machinery; may mix and/or spray chemicals (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable); remove undesirable and excess growth from crops or farm grounds; remove rocks from field; paint/repair/maintain farm structures and grounds; replace/repair fencing; perform general cleanup of farm areas, equipment, conveyors, buildings; operate vehicle, motor bike, or all-terrain vehicle in the course of performing duties; transport crops to market; sow seed and plant cuttings; recognize disease and/or nutrient/moisture requirements by plant texture/development or soil condition; observe general condition of plants and apply the appropriate care; read/interpret meters used to regulate/control environmental conditions; maintain/repair hydroponic/environmental control systems; mix planting soil; pollinate/prune/transplant/pinch plants and cull appropriately to ensure development of product; propagate plants; harvest, pack, and store crops; haul and spread soil/products to condition land; dig/rake and screen soil and fill cold frames/hot beds; fill growing tanks with water; trap/poison pests; plant plants in containers; prepare crops for shipment; prepare boxes for packing products; care for young non-producing fruit trees including weeding, hoeing, trunk painting, hand fertilizing and growth selection by hand and clipping; pick up/handle/climb ladders; clear property; plant trees; build trellises; spread composted material; clean fields after harvest; harvest, sort, and gather crop by hand; pick or cut crop from plant, soil, stem, or root; place crop in buckets or bags; hand thin plants; identify and remove crop that is misshapen, damaged, or inferior; pick crop from plant according to grade, color, and size by grasping crop with hands and removing from plant; prevent bruising of crop or breaking of branches; use small knives, scissors, or tools to cut crops from branches or vines or to cut top foliage from root crops or produce; prepare plastic growing beds; inspect growing crops for signs of disease, insect manifestations, worms, or rot; harvest crops into packaging; guide crops into packaging; tie crops into specified size bunches, using wires or rubber bands; wash crops; load crops on trucks or field conveyors; load/unload trucks or trailers; place full buckets in trailer; hand crop off to or receive from another worker for placement in boxes located on trailers; place crop in boxes located on trailer; perform any other labor considered necessary for the efficient structure of farm properties; pick fruit/vegetables off vines and place in buckets; plant seeds/plants by walking behind tractors to observe planter (unclog planter if necessary); weed using farm hand tools to remove weeds from fields; pull produce from the ground; clip ends off produce and toss the tops back into the field; drop produce into five-gallon bucket; place produce in bags and lay in field to mature; even out rows for harvest; sort seed according to grade, color and size; discard diseased/rotting/inferior product and foreign matter.
Special Requirements
Applicants must have 3 months of experience operating 600 horsepower (or greater) farm equipment and provide the contact information of at least one reference who can verify experience and performance. Applicants hired must be able to obtain a valid drivers license within 2 weeks of hire as driving on public roads may be required. To meet minimum acceptable performance standards when irrigating, the worker must, after a 10 day conditioning period, move an average of at least 48 40-foot sections of 3-inch pipe or 44 40-foot sections of 4-inch pipe per hour under normal working conditions.
