Job description
Ginner/Press – Workers must be able to monitor and adjust equipment and controls. Some controls maybe touch screen controls. Maintain machinery and equipment to ensure that it is clean and in safe working condition. Perform routine maintenance on equipment and adjust or repair when necessary, using hand and power tools while being 30 feet in the air. Must not be afraid of heights. Replace defective parts, components, or systems. Prepare trucks for hauling according to Federal and State regulations. Worker must be able to walk, bend, and sit for long periods of time. Work is done in all kinds of weather (from extreme heat, rain, and extreme cold). Hauling time may vary due to the availability of crop, weather conditions, mechanical issues, etc.
Forklift
Workers must have 3 months experience in operating tractor and driving a forklift with bale clamps. Workers will check and maintain proper fluid levels and refill propane tanks. Workers may also operate tractors and loaders. Safety training for use of farm equipment and tractors will be provided. To ensure the safety of all employees, those interested in operating machinery must be able to communicate with and adequately follow instructions give by management. Management reserves the right to restrict employees time and may therefore place other employees’ safety in risk. The ability of an employee to safely operate machinery will be left to the discretion of management.
Heavy Truck Drivers:
Using specialized lifting and moving loader equipment, workers will move cotton modules within individual farmers’ fields to higher, drier ground as needed, repair tears in module plastic to prevent loss of cotton during transport to the Gin, and will separate moldy, damaged cotton from good cotton, suitable for ginning, leaving cotton not suitable for ginning in the field, communicating with supervisor for directions and solutions if leaving damaged cotton may be prudent. Prepare trucks and trailers for hauling according to Federal and State regulations. After safe loading and securing of cotton, haul raw cotton to Gin, operate heavy equipment in transporting and assist in minor maintenance of equipment (including checking oil, brakes, etc.), perform pre- and post-trip inspections as required under DOT requirements, conduct all safety checks on trucks and equipment. Specialty equipment will be used to spear, move and hoist large, compressed modules of cotton onto a truck trailer that has been braced and modified to hold rectangular modules or cylindrical modules. Specialized lift bed, moving floor trucks can be adjusted in the rear height so water damaged compressed cotton in larger modules can be separated, and cotton suitable for ginning can be loaded onto the trailer and taken to the Gin. Workers will adjust the rear height of the trailer bed so that by backing up the truck with grabbing chains, equipment can skim off and retrieve only the “good” cotton,” leaving cotton not suitable for ginning in field. Hauling time may vary due to the availability of crop, weather conditions, mechanical issues etc. Safety training for use of farm equipment and tractors will be provided. While in the fields, workers may consult with the Employer’s supervisor’s regarding whether to leave wet, moldy or damaged cotton in the field. Workers must be able to copy information from “Gin tag” on each cotton module to record the date the module was made, to confirm the producer and track when the module goes to and arrives at the Gin. It is critical to have each cotton module delivered to the Gin as soon as possible, consistent with safe operation of all equipment.
Special Requirements
Applicants must be 18 years or older. Employer may conduct background checks on all new applicants for employment. Must have three months experience in cotton gin processing. Valid Drivers License required if asked to drive vehicles. Workers may be required to work day and/or night shift. Work begins at assigned time depending on what shift, day, or night. Workers must not have any physical limitations that would prevent them from climbing up or down stairs and/or ladders. Workers must be able to work all day standing up. Workers should expect periods of little/no work during harvesting time. Hours and days of work may vary due to weather conditions. Workers must have multi-limb coordination ability while standing and walking for long periods. Workers will make repetitive movements, extensive sitting, walking, lifting, repetitive movements, pushing and pulling, and stooping. The workers will need to be able to some heavy lifting.
