Job description
Planting & Cultivating Broccoli:
Workers will perform various duties all associated with planting, cultivation, and harvesting, broccoli. Work involves laying ground plastic, planting, cultivation, harvest, plant seedlings, applying fertilizer, string/stake plants, removal of competing vegetation, cut or pick by hand vegetable, placing vegetable in container, emptying container into bin or stacking container on trailer, sort and grade product, repack product in box, and removing ground plastic. Work involves using hand tools such as knife, hoe, hand sprayer, and carrying containers.
Broccoli:
Workers will harvest broccoli. Workers may perform any of the following duties involved in growing broccoli. Workers will cut mature heads using a knife as specified by employer. Products will then be placed into boxes and placed on trailers for transport. Workers may grade products removing bad or damaged leaves and repack for shipment. Workers will be required to stay on their assigned row. Time
worked and the amount of produce picked will be recorded electronically. Workers piece rate pay may be determined by the total number of field boxes picked by that worker. Field box volume will be determined by visual observation and/or weight that the box is full and level. Workers must handle products gently to not cause bruising of crop. Workers must take care if using knives to ensure their and other workers safety.
Packing:
Work involves sorting and cleaning agricultural products and work area to remove contaminants and debris, place products in containers, attend automatic filler, assemble/repair boxes, crates, bins, pallets, feed cardboard into box machine, applying ice as necessary, and stack boxes for storage or shipment.
Equipment Operations:
Work involves loading, unloading, moving products, equipment, and materials utilizing tractors, forklifts, vehicles, and equipment to support agricultural activities, prep equipment for use, attach implements, mix and apply chemicals, cultivation and mowing.
Levelers:
Boxed products are carefully hand-leveled by workers to assure an even level of product in each container. Excess products are removed from overfilled boxes and placed carefully in separate containers.
Box Machine Operators:
Machines are fed flat corrugated product or plastic by workers to produce a glued container. Workers feed finished containers into a chute for fillers. Work may also include hand folding to close.
Stackers:
Workers must be able to pick up filled boxes from conveyor and stack carefully by prescribed pattern and height onto pallets as
directed. Work includes bin and pallet repair as needed.
Minor Crops:
This employer may grow one or more other crops. Farmers frequently decide whether to plant these crops and what additional crops
they will plant after this application is submitted. Information on crops planted after submission of this application will be disclosed in
writing to the U.S. Department of Labor for approval as soon as it is known.
Special Requirements
All workers must have at least 3 months verifiable experience hand-harvesting a perishable crop. Worker must be able to provide
contactable references from similar farm operations to attest to experience.
Sanitation Requirements for all jobs:
All employees are trained in the rules and regulations of food safety and are expected to follow all protocols therein as failure to do so
will result in a loss of employment. For food and general personal safety purposes, all workers will be required and expected to always
follow common sanitary practices. This is particularly critical when hand- harvesting crops for human consumption. Employees are
required to cleanse their hands by washing them thoroughly with soap and water after using the provided bathroom accommodations
and before entering the fields for harvest activities or the packing facility for packing operations.
