Job description

Must have 3 months experience with 200 head of livestock on the range. One reference required.
Competence around horses and all terrain vehicles is essential. Required to be available 24 hours per day 7 days a week. All job duties are directly related to the production of livestock. Early in the season, the employee will gather cattle into fields surrounding the headquarters and ride among them, checking feed quantity and quality, body condition, water availability and predator activity. If necessary, employee will distribute supplemental feed. As the winter progresses, the employee will gather the cattle into the valley near the headquarters to monitor calving: assuring each calf stands and nurses and scattering straw when necessary. He will assist in different births, warm and bottle feed chilled calves. Increased patrol for predators. Much of the work occurs at first light at very cold temperatures- often it is necessary to break ice for drinking. As spring approaches employee will help prepare the herd for spring turnout by restraining calves, vaccinating, branding, castrating, and dehorning. Employee will also repair fences and livestock facilities.
Some work/tasks may occur off the range, but more than 51% of work will be performed on the range. Western Range Association and its member ranches facilitate practices of good animal husbandry. Employees that are found abusing, neglecting or abandoning livestock entrusted to their care may be terminated for cause. If the negligent/abusive actions of an employee result in the loss/death of livestock/animals or cause harm to another person, the employee may be held accountable for these actions.
