Job description

All job duties are closely and directly related to the production of livestock, including sheep, goats, and cattle.
Perform any combination of the following tasks to attend to livestock: feed and water livestock and/or ensure adequate provision of both; herd or trail livestock to appropriate grazing areas; assist animals with birthing and attend to health of offspring; examine animals to detect diseases and injuries; reduce or eliminate depredation on livestock by predatory animals using nonlethal deterrents and adopting nonlethal deterrent behaviors; prevent, to the greatest extent possible, livestock and horses from eating poisonous and noxious plants; assist with vaccination of livestock by herding into corrals, pens or stalls and, if required, by physically restraining animals there or in the field; apply medications to cuts, sores and bruises; apply biocides that are compliant with employer protocols and certifications to livestock; assist with castration of livestock; brand, attach ear tags to or otherwise mark livestock for identification purposes; may assist with irrigating forage for livestock, perform weed control in grazing areas (including control of noxious, invasive and poisonous plant species); build and repair fence and livestock handling and/or housing facilities to restrain, contain or protect livestock; may assist in the maintenance of tools, equipment and other livestock handling facilities necessary to livestock production; safely operate motorized vehicles including motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, trucks and/or other utility vehicles in the course of performing duties; feed, water, and tend to working dogs (both livestock guardian dogs and herding dogs) and horses that assist herders in caring for livestock; and, finally and importantly, herd livestock on the range in rough country on horseback or foot.

Special Requirements

Applicants must have 6 months experience with livestock care and provide the contact information of at least one reference who can verify experience and performance. May be required to ride and handle horses and ATV's for movement of livestock on and off range. Employee will work outdoors in all types of weather and may experience occasional exposure to herding hazards such as poisonous snakes and predators.
Applicants must be willing to: perform tasks capably and efficiently without close supervision, and live and work singly or in small groups of workers in isolated areas for extended periods of time and maintain and manage remote housing locations in a safe and responsible manner.
