Job description
Workers will use mechanized and power-driven equipment such as tractors, planters, sprayers, cultivator, and other equipment to plant, cultivate, harvest, and irrigate crops. Workers will be expected to be able to operate agricultural equipment with or without direct. Workers must be able to comprehend and follow instructions, communicate effectively to supervisors. Unusual, complex, or non-routine activities will be supervised. Field workers will be expected to perform their general duties in a timely and proficient manner. Workers must obey all safety rules and basic instructions and be able to recognize, understand, and comply with safety, pesticide warning/re-entry and other essential postings.
Workers must have a clean driving record (no major moving violations such as but no limited to Driving while intoxicated or reckless driving) and able to obtain an insurable driver’s license may be required to drive company vehicles.
Workers with proper licenses will use company vehicles to transport employers’ crops, tools and fellow workers.
Workers will install and maintain irrigation systems and water lines. Move and install irrigation pipes and equipment, remove drip tubing or install drip tubing, dig and maintain ditches.
Plants, cultivates, and harvests horticultural specialties, such as perennials, annuals, succulents, Poinsettia, shrubs, bedding plants, and edibles. Duties are performed in an environmentally controlled structure, applying knowledge of environmental systems: Ascertains growing schedules and deviations from established procedures from grower. Sow seeds using seed sower. Will fill plant flat using flat filler and will fill pots using potting machine. Will insert plastic containers into filler machine and maintain proper operation of filler machine. Will also ensure proper operation of soil mixer. Will apply UPC stickers as needed. Will place various forms of plant into assigned containers. Will move planted containers from production line to transport carts arranged neatly. Will transport carts full of planted containers to the greenhouse or field. Will unload planted containers from transport carts and return the carts to the production area. Looks at and feels leaf texture, bloom development and soil condition to determine nutrient and moisture requirements and to detect and identify germ and pest infestations. Sets fertilizer timing and metering devices that control frequency and amount of nutrients to be introduced into irrigation system. Applies herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides to destroy undesirable growth and pests using spray wand connected to solution tank. Reads and interprets sensing indicators and regulates humidity, ventilation, and carbon dioxide systems to control environmental conditions. Pollinates, prunes, transplants and pinches plants and culls flowers and plants to ensure development of marketable products. Harvests, packs, and stores crop using techniques appropriate for individual horticultural specialty. May maintain and environmental control systems. May mix planting soil following prescribed procedure. Will also be responsible for ensuring the quality of previous line operations. Will insert corresponding tags into each container. May record information, such as chemicals used and environmental conditions to maintain required records. May maintain and repair structures using materials such as corrugated fiberglass panels, lath, glass panes and putty and tools such as hammer, saw and putty knife. Will load and unload plant material.
Special Requirements
All applicants must have at least 3 months experience working on a commercial greenhouse. Applicants must be able to furnish affirmative job references from recent employers operating comparable operations establishing acceptable previous experience. Must be physically able to meet and perform all job specifications stated in job order. Must be able to work in the hot humid weather for extended periods of time. Workers are subject to random drug testing at no cost to the employee. All drug testing will occur after the worker begins his or her employment and is not a part of the interview process. Failing or refusing a drug test will result in immediate termination.
