Job description
Bucksnort Ranch requires the temporary seasonal services of a Farm Hand to support our spring and fall calving seasons. One herd of cattle calves and breeds in the Fall, the remaining three herds calve and breed in the Spring. From January through October, we require labor above that needed for ongoing operations to support our annual calving seasons. The Farm Hand will perform the following job duties by month:
January: Calving season starts approximately January 1 for Herd 1; Breeding for fall herd; Vaccination begins 15 days after calving for cow; extra care for cattle preparing to give birth because calve can breach, prolapse; creep feed; Start soil samples for planting.
February: Calving continues until the end of February for Herd 2; Vaccination; extra care for cattle preparing to give birth; creep feed; Put out lime based on soil samples; Prepare fall calves for sale; select calves in the pasture.
March: Calving continues until end March for Herd 3; Breeding starts in March, 60 days after calving; Vaccination; extra care for cattle preparing to give birth; vaccinate fall calves in early March, wean in mid-march; vaccinate adult cows in March; creep feed; Fertilizing; Prepare fall calves for sale; once they are weaned, halter breaking, washing, preparing for sale, taking pictures, videos.
April: Calving continues through April for Herd 3 including bull bred cattle; Breeding; extra care for cattle preparing to give birth; creep feed; Fertilizing and planting in end of April; harvesting winter wheat; making haylage; Sale of fall calves.
May: Breeding ends first week of May; extra care for cattle preparing to give birth; bull breeding clean up; Increased monitoring for health because of heat and flys in summer months which can result in pink eye or respiratory disease; creep feed; Planting in early May spring haylage every other week; harvesting winter wheat; making haylage.
June: First week bull breeding cleaning; Increased monitoring for health in heat; creep feed; Harvest haylage every other week.
July: Vaccination for calves; Weaning cattle starts end of July; Increased monitoring for health because of heat; creep feed; Harvest haylage every other week.
August: Vaccination for calves; Wean; All adult cows get vaccinated when calves are weaned; Increased monitoring for health because of heat; Harvest haylage every other week; Prepare spring calves for sale; select calves for sale.
September: Vaccination for calves; Finish weaning middle of September; All adult cows get vaccinated when calves are weaned; Increased monitoring for health; harvest haylage until end of September; Prepare spring calves for sale; prepare for sale, taking pictures, videos
October: Fall calving starts October; extra care for cattle preparing to give birth; Increased monitoring for health; Harvest haylage every other week until the frost usually middle of October; plant Harvest Spring haylage every other week until the frost usually middle of October; plant Winter Wheat; Prepare Spring calves for sale; calves by halter breaking, washing, and providing a special diet for 60 days; prepare sale pictures, videos, and other materials.
