Job description
Crops/Commodities:
Farm work: Vidalia Onions and pecans.
Perform manual labor to plant, grade and pack Vidalia onions. Harvest, grade and field pack pecans. Prune and trim pecan trees. Pull, bundle, bag and load Vidalia onion sprouts onto trucks. Throw (pitch) onion plants from tractor. Walk down rows and throw (pitch) onion sprouts into beds. Workers will then put sprout into pre-dug hole and bend down to cover with dirt. Any extra sprouts will be taken to the next row. Workers must use care when planting not to damage transplants. Count and check planted crops. Inform supervisors of crop progress. Load and unload products and materials by hand and using machinery. Onions are unloaded at the packinghouse to be graded and packed. Grade, sort or classify harvested onions on an assembly line according to factors such as color, species, length, width, appearance, feel, smell and quality to ensure correct processing and usage. Place products in containers according to grade and mark grades on containers. Make and close containers/boxes and record grade and/or identification numbers. Measure/weigh/count and check harvest products and materials. Stack boxes/containers onto pallet. Pick up old pecans in the field to be hauled off. Workers will be assigned rows of trees and must prune and thin each tree as shown by the field supervisor. Limbs must not be torn from tree, nor should limbs be completely stripped of leaves. Pull weeds, pick up roots, mow grass, clean and maintain work areas. Workers may use hand tools and operate farm vehicles and equipment, including tractors. Workers are also responsible for farm and field sanitation including picking up trash and cleaning bathrooms and other farm sanitation duties. Transport drinking water to field workers. Workers who apply for and obtain an FLC or FLC employee certificate of registration with driving authorized by the USDOL Wage and Hour Division during the employment period may drive multi-purpose vehicles including vans and/or buses to haul crops, supplies, tools, and/or farm workers. Workers will be expected to perform all activities listed in the job order; however, packing activities are limited to workers assigned to worksite locations listed in the Addendum B for J.G. Shuman Farms, Inc. only. Workers will be assigned to worksites as needed. Assist with Good Agricultural Practices policies. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Persons seeking employment in this position must be available for the entire period requested by the employer. Employer reserves the right to discharge an obviously unqualified worker, malingerer or recalcitrant worker who is physically able but is unwilling to perform the work necessary for the employer to grow a premium quality product, or for any other lawful reason.
Employer attests that it has sent (or will promptly send) original surety bond to CNPC.
Employer may request, but not require, workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a worker's Sabbath or federal holidays. Worker must report to work at designated time and place each day. Daily or weekly work schedule may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors. Employer will notify workers of any change to start time. Workers will have an unpaid lunch break.
There will be 2 shifts occurring for the entire contract. The first shift will begin at 7:00am and end at 3:00pm. The second shift will begin at 8:00am and end at 4:00pm. Additional hours may be offered, however, workers will not be required to work more than 7 hours per day.
Special Requirements
One month of verifiable farm work experience required. Walk, bend, reach, stoop, lift, carry and load up to 60 lbs. Perform repetitive movements. Most job duties require workers to work in extremely hot, cold and/or wet weather.
