Job description
Manually plant, cultivate, and harvest apples. Use hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning
hooks, shears and knives. Use and transport ladders. Till soil and apply fertilizers; transplant, weed, thin or prune crops; apply pesticides; clean, pack, and load harvested products; repair fences and farm buildings; clean and maintain lodge quarters; set up and operate irrigation equipment. Operate tractors and platforms to fertilize, plant, cultivate, spray and harvest crops. Direct and monitor the activities of work crews engaged in planting, weeding or harvesting activities. Drive trucks or other multi-purpose vehicles to transport supplies, tools or farm workers from place to place around the farm properties during the workday (including public roads to reach the work fields).
Employer will furnish to workers, without cost, all tools and equipment required in the performance of the duties assigned. Field temperatures may range from 0 to 90+ degrees (F) with possible wet morning conditions. Daily or weekly work schedules may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors.
Workers should report for work with their own suitable work clothing. Apples injured by bruising during picking shall not exceed 1% (WNY) for fresh and 1% (WNY) for processing as defined in the US standard for grades. Productivity must be at least 4-20 bushel bins fresh market and/or 6-20 bushel bins processing fruit per day.
While working in the field, phone usage is limited to emergency use only. Workers may not report for work under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Possession or use of illegal drugs or alcohol on the company worksites or vehicles is prohibited and will be cause for immediate termination. After hiring, employer may conduct random drug tests at employer's expense. Employer also retains the right to terminate workers for lawful job-related reasons, including but not limited to workers who: are regularly absent or tardy; malingers or otherwise refuses to work in accordance with direction, or is otherwise obviously unqualified to perform the job; is physically able but does not demonstrate the willingness to perform the work necessary. Job abandonment will be deemed to occur after 5 consecutive workdays of unexcused absences. Employer retains the right, in its sole discretion, to pay more than the stated rate at certain times during contract period based on business need. Any adjustment to the compensation will be communicated to the Employee and maybe made at the Employer's discretion. Workers must have experience at piece rate production and must have experience in working with farm sanitary and safety practices as required in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) plans. Workers must be physically able to lift up to 80 pounds. Due to health and safety concerns relating to pesticide application and the operation of equipment on our farm, workers are required to have the ability to comprehend simple instructions in English. Those that are requested to drive will be required to possess an appropriate license. No one will be rejected for this position that does not possess a driver's license. Workers referred against this order must have a minimum 3 months verifiable experience in performing tasks described in this order.
Special Requirements
Workers must have experience at piece rate production and must have experience in working with farm sanitary and safety practices as required in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) plans. Workers must be physically able to lift up to 80 pounds. Due to health and safety concerns relating to pesticide application and the operation of equipment on
our farm, workers are required to have the ability to comprehend simple instructions in English.
