Job description
Operates power equipment, machinery and vehicles and performs heavy manual labor in the growing and balled and burlap (B&B) harvesting of nursery stock in fields, container growing areas and/or environmentally controlled structures. Prepares field for planting by clearing cull stock, brush and debris; mixes soil and/or prepare growth media; plants seedlings, liners, cutting and/or transplants in containers or open fields by hand or operating or riding on mechanical planters; prunes, straightens and ties trees and shrubs; pulls or cuts and removes weeds; operates, adjusts container stock; operates or assists in operation of mechanical diggers and other mechanical equipment; wraps root balls and secures covering material with twine or staples; lifts , carries, transports, loads nursery stock or materials and supplies; performs general nursery labor and maintenance activities, including mending, repair, maintenance or preparation of nursery facilities, equipment, buildings and housing. Requires a minimum of three months of prior experience in a diverse tree and shrub nursery, with extensive involvement in harvesting balled and burlap stock.
Instruction and general supervision will be provided by a designated lead worker or company supervisor. Exceptionally complex or non-routine horticulture activities will be closely supervised. Workers will be expected to perform basic or repetitive duties in a timely manner without close supervision.
Workers will be expected to have proficiency with power equipment as well as with hand tools. By way of example not limited to, power equipment may include tractor-mounted tree spades and other tractor powered implements. Workers with appropriate licenses may operate general purpose vehicles to transport workers, equipment and product from one Angelica field or facility to another.
Workers must be able to listen to, understand and follow instructions of designated lead worker or company supervisor. Additional qualifications include the ability to repetitively crouch, bend, and reach through the entire workday; the ability to repetitively lift and carry items weighing up to 75 lbs; and the ability to work outside in dusty and dirty conditions in extremes of heat and cold, and in inclement weather.
The employer may discipline the worker, including requiring the worker to leave the field ("time out") for a period of time determined my the supervisor, suspension from employment, or termination of employment, or termination of employment as described in the Angelica Nurseries, Inc. work Rules and Disciplinary Procedures.
Special Requirements
The employer does not require perspective applicants to take or pass a drug test as part of the interview process, but they will be completely informed of the policy. The employer administers a random drug testing program, at the employers expense, periodically throughout the year. In addition, the employer has a no-exception drug policy requiring newly hired employees to take and pass an employer paid drug test no later than days from the date on which work commences. Every new hire, both foreign and domestic, must undergo testing as part of their eligibility to work for the company. All testing is conducting uniformly after an initial job offer has been extended and accepted by the new hire.
