Job description

Provide attentive and nurturing care for children in a private household setting, while supporting parents in meeting the children's physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development needs. Responsibilities include planning and preparing nutritious meals, managing children’s laundry and clothing care, organizing age-appropriate play activities and outings, reinforcing discipline consistent with the family’s approach, and encouraging intellectual stimulation. As the employer is a Hispanic family, the role also includes language development activities in both English and Spanish, fostering bilingual communication and cultural awareness from an early age.

Special Requirements

Must speak Spanish fluently.

As a bilingual, Mexican-American household raising a one-year-old son in a culturally immersive environment, we respectfully submit this letter to justify our need for a nanny who is fluent in Spanish and knowledgeable in Mexican culture. This language and cultural competency is not merely a preference but a business necessity directly tied to the developmental and educational goals we have set for our child.

Our household primarily operates in Spanish at home. We are deeply committed to ensuring that our child becomes fluent in Spanish from an early age, as research consistently demonstrates that early bilingual exposure, particularly during the formative years, enhances cognitive development, communication, and long-term academic success. A caregiver who can consistently speak Spanish, reinforce vocabulary, and model linguistic fluency is critical to achieving this outcome.

Moreover, our family places significant value on passing down our cultural heritage. A nanny familiar with Mexican traditions, including food, music, holidays, and customs, will contribute meaningfully to our childs identity formation and emotional well-being. This role goes beyond basic caregiving; it involves actively participating in cultural transmission through activities, meals, language, and storytelling. Without this alignment, the consistency and cultural integrity of our home environment would be disrupted.

Importantly, this job opportunity is located in Central Florida, which is home to a large and vibrant Hispanic community. Within this labor market, it is both common and accepted for families, especially bilingual and immigrant households, to seek caregivers who speak Spanish and understand their cultural background. This qualification is reflective of normal and accepted requirements in the same occupation and geographic area, including among non-H-2B employers. Therefore, the requirement for Spanish fluency and cultural familiarity is not unusual, but rather consistent with prevailing practices in the area of intended employment.

We also emphasize that this is a live-out position in a private residence, where the nanny will be the primary caregiver during the workday. Clear communication in Spanish is essential for matters related to safety, routines, health, and emotional support, not only with our child but also with the parents.

For these reasons, we respectfully request that the Department of Labor recognize this language and cultural requirement as a bona fide occupational qualification, grounded in the realities of the job duties and consistent with local employment practices.

Sincerely,

Jose Maria Ribot Barroso
