Job description
Brian Thompson Farms, Inc operates a custom farming business and cash crop grain farm in New York that provides custom tillage, planting and harvesting services for agricultural producers.
Workers will operate agricultural equipment to custom harvest alfalfa, beans, corn, and soybeans at various client locations as listed in the itinerary/Addendum B. Workers will be required to safely operate self-propelled and tractor-powered harvesting equipment and related support equipment, which may include combines, forage harvesters, swathers/mowers, windrowers, heads/attachments, tractors, grain carts, various tillage implements, skid loaders, and other farm equipment used in harvesting and handling crops.
Workers will set up and operate equipment for harvesting, including adjusting speed and operating controls. Workers will adjust and monitor harvesting heads, cutters, blowers, conveyors, belts/chains, and other mechanisms as appropriate for the crop and field conditions. Workers will load, unload, and move harvested crops to designated storage, elevator, truck, or staging locations, and may assist with weighing loads and completing required documentation. Workers will be required to travel with the crew between worksites per the job order itinerary and may assist in transporting harvesting machines and equipment between work locations.
During periods of inclement weather or downtime, workers may be required to perform routine, job-related duties at the shop or worksite locations, such as cleaning equipment, fueling, greasing, lubricating, and performing daily pre-operation and post-operation inspections. Workers will be required to service machinery and perform routine maintenance and minor in-field repairs on equipment, using hand tools, to keep equipment operating safely and efficiently.
Workers must follow all safety rules and operating procedures and must be able to work long hours outdoors in varying weather and field conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, wind, dust, and exposure to pollen and agricultural allergens. Work is to be done for long periods of time in the field, when plants may be wet with dew and rain, and may be required during light rain, snow, moderate winds, direct sun, high humidity and extreme temperatures. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, insect spray, related chemicals, etc. may affect workers ability to perform the job. Workers must be able to perform the required work with or without reasonable accommodations.
Must wear assigned personal protective equipment when required. Must report for work daily wearing appropriate work clothing and boots or other durable foot wear. Casual clothing not permitted. Workers wearing inappropriate clothing will not be permitted to start work.
Workers will have an unpaid lunch break when working more than 5 hours. Must report to work at the designated time and place each day. Daily or weekly work schedules may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors. Employer will notify workers of any change to start/end times.
Special Requirements
Must have 2 months experience operating and performing light maintenance on large agricultural equipment. Employer requires all-newly hired employees to take and pass an employer-paid background check due to the proximity of family and young children at the worksites. All background checks are conducted uniformly after an initial job offer has been extended and accepted by the new hire.
Workers must have a valid, insurable driver's license or be eligible to apply for same at no cost to the worker. Will be asked to drive vehicles for transporting workers, goods, or commodities on company business. No CDL required.
