Job description
All applicants must be able, willing and qualified to perform the work described in the job order and must be available for the entire period of employment specified in Section A.3 & A.4. Workers will be required to: manually plant, cultivate, and harvest a variety of fruits and vegetables including sweet corn, cucumbers, squash, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Workers may use hand tools, such as shovels, hoes, pruning hooks, shears and knives; till soil; transplant, weed, thin, and prune crops; clean and pack harvested products; drive and operate tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, trucks, and forklifts; transport harvested fruits and vegetables from field to packing house; prune trees seasonally to promote optimum growth of tree and fruit; and apply pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers to crops following DEC guidelines. Workers will also be asked to assist in greenhouses where workers will: mix dirt; fill containers; plant, spray, weed, fertilize and water plants and flowers; and perform tasks using hands and gardening tools. Workers may be asked to operate trucks or other multi-purpose vehicles to transport workers from housing (whether on or off farm) to the farm properties; haul tools, supplies, or crops; transport workers from place to place around the farm properties during the workday (including on public roads to reach farmer's fields); and/or transport workers to the grocery store, bank, or laundry facilities on an as needed basis. Workers that are requested to drive will be required to possess a valid driver's license; no worker will be rejected for not having a driver's license. Workers who do drive will still perform the same field work and other duties as non-driving workers; driving is not a primary duty. Workers will be compensated at the correct rate of pay for all hours worked, including when they are performing the employer's obligation to drive. Picking apples requires workers to handle ladders up to 22' and pick into buckets strung around shoulders that weigh up to 40 pounds when filled. The work assigned will be physically demanding, long periods of standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, as well as climbing ladders for long periods of time will be required. Workers must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds on a frequent basis. Workers may not use cell phones for personal use during work times. Phone use must be limited to breaks and lunch. Field temperatures may range from 0 to 90+ degrees (F) with possible wet morning conditions. Once hired, employers may conduct random drug tests at employer's expense. Workers may require to work 8-hour shifts within the hours of 7:00am to 7:00pm from Monday through Saturday. This schedule totals 48 hours per week. The 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. range accounts for varying orchard conditions (e.g., weather, crop maturity, harvest demands) to ensure that workers are able to complete the required weekly hours. Workers will not be scheduled to work a full 12-hour shift. Workers will be provided with a 60-minute lunch break, staggered between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., as determined by both the workers and management. Workers may choose where to eat their lunch and must return to work after the 60-minute break. In addition, workers will receive a 15-minute break in the morning and a 15-minute break in the afternoon, as agreed upon by the worker and management. The daily and weekly work schedules may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, or other factors. The employer will notify workers of any changes to the schedule. The employer will provide one day of training and two days of work to demonstrate satisfactory performance of the duties described in this job description. The employer will provide, at no cost to the workers, all tools and equipment required to perform the assigned duties. Workers must be able to understand and follow directions in simple English.
