Job description

All the tasks in this job description constitute one (1) job; the employer may assign workers to different tasks on any day or to multiple tasks during the same day at the sole judgment of the employer. Workers must be physically able to work in hot, dry, windy weather, bending or stooping to reach ground level crop and able to stand on their feet or be on their knees for long periods of time. Worker will be required to hand harvest onions to market specifications so as not to cause damage to the produce by clipping onion roots and tops in the field; Place product in buckets and transfer to field bins.
Opening A Field: Prior to harvesting a field for the first time, workers may be required to move onions and distribute them into adjacent onion beds/rows. This will clear a windrow for equipment towing bin boxes for harvest. This will only be done in a few rows in each new field as it is opened.
Harvesting Onions: Worker will pick up onions at ground level and clip each top and roots of the onion using supplied shears and place in bucket. At no time will onions be dropped from a height greater than 8 inches into buckets, or at any time during handling. Worker must exercise extreme care not to drop the onions at any time during handling. Worker should place the onions in the bucket carefully and with caution to avoid bruising or fingernail cuts. Worker will transfer the onions from the buckets to field bins. Loose onions or onions spilling out of field bins must be picked up and placed back into bins or buckets. Workers may operate a forklift to move full bins and load the bins onto a flatbed truck for storage. Workers will also provide the harvest crews with empty bins. Workers may be required to perform work, on the farm, that is incidental to farming the crops listed in the application, such as weeding or hoeing the onion crop. The weeding will be done by hoe, not hand, and with a long-handled hoe. Participate in the inspection, grading,
sorting, storage, and post-harvest treatment of onions. Workers may transport crops and farm equipment between growing sites and to storage. All other duties assigned under this order will be those duties of Farmworker, Diversified Crops, under the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Classification Code 45-2092.02.
Full Growing Season Commitment: The job offered requires that the worker be available for work 5 hours Sunday and 7 hours per day Monday through Friday every day that work is available for the full period of employment shown in Item A.3 through A.4, even though work may be slack for brief periods, from time to time throughout the employment period in the production of these crops. The worker agrees to be available for work and perform the assigned work for the assigned employer whenever work is available through the full period of employment shown in Item A.3 through A.4. Work available is defined as, no work required by the worker on the scheduled day off of Saturday night each week, but work is required 5 hours Sunday and 7 hours per day Monday through Friday. The worker understands that if he abandons his employment or is terminated for cause prior to the end of the period of employment shown in Item 9 he will forfeit the 3/4 guarantee and reimbursement of certain transportation costs described elsewhere in this job order and will not be eligible for rehire. Excessive absences and/or tardiness, as defined in the Work Rules attached hereto, cannot be tolerated and may result in termination. Daily individual work assignments, crew assignments, and location of work, will be made by and at the sole discretion of the farm manger and/or farm supervisor as the needs of the farming operation dictate. Workers may be assigned a variety of duties in any given day and/or different tasks on different days. Workers will be expected to perform any of the listed duties as assigned by the worker's supervisor.

Special Requirements

Must have 30 days verifiable experience in hand harvesting onions and some experience in general agricultural labor practices.

Employees may be requested post-hire to take drug and alcohol tests at the expense of Peri & Sons Farms at no cost to the worker. Drug and alcohol testing may also take place in the event an accident or incident occurs that warrants testing per the company policy. Failure to comply with the request of the company may result in immediate termination.
