Job description

Workers will perform all job duties according to the instruction and supervision of the farm manager, horse trainers, and senior staff. Extremely specific instructions may be given regarding care for particular horses, sometimes on a daily basis.
Workers must be physically fit to work on their feet in bent positions for long periods of time, and must be able to endure manual labor through extreme variant weather conditions, between temperatures of 10 and over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, high humidity, wind, rain, sleet, snow, etc. Workers must appear promptly at or before the designated start time on each workday and competently perform a full day of work until the designated end time. Workers should be able to regularly lift 30lbs and occasionally lift up to 60lbs, when unloading hay for example. Workers should be able to see, walk, run, squat, hear, and speak. Worker will occasionally climb into
loft or up ladders.
Workers will attend to live horses of varying ages and care of grounds and plantings. Identify and catch horses in stalls and fields, affix halters and lead ropes, lead into barn and tie securely and turn back out or load/unload for trailering. Competence in basic grooming practices including bathing, brushing, picking feet, hoof care, clipping, changing halters, pulling manes, and hot toweling. Clean stalls by removing soiled bedding and manure, replace with fresh bedding. Strip stalls and disinfect floors, walls and surrounding areas. Sweep barn aisles, stall areas, ceilings to remove dirt, hay, cobwebs and other duties. Maintain/clean and fill water troughs and 5 gallon water buckets. Clean and refill feed tubs and carts (bags of feed weigh 50lbs each). Handle basic
feeding activities including apportioning grain, hay and feed supplements according to instruction. Observe and identify sick or injured horses. Hold horses for vet and farrier. Use shiftneys and shanks in leading yearlings.
Assist in handling young horses in preparation for sales and acclimating to humans, preparing stalls and sale grounds; hand walking yearlings for exercise, standing and presenting yearlings; Administer vaccinations & medications. Treat and care of sick horses. Bandaging horses, wrapping legs. Care and maintenance of grounds and plantings; including mowing, weedeating, blowing leaves, snow and ice removal, pasture care, and equipment care.
General Conditions:
A normal work week is a five or six day period between Sunday and Saturday from 07:00 am to 04:00 pm or to 5:30 pm(unpaid meal break from noon – 1pm). Weekend work is required. Workers may be requested to work on federal holidays and their Sabbath but will not be required to do so. If work is available beyond normal workdays, employer may offer, but not require, worker an opportunity to work additional hours. Workers will report to work at designated time and place as directed by assigned employer each day. Workers may volunteer to work additional hours when work is available. Agricultural overtime rules apply.
Down time: Workers should expect occasional periods of little or no work because of weather or other conditions beyond the employer’s control. These periods can occur any time throughout the season. Worker may be required to work when weather is wet and should have suitable clothing for conditions which include light rain and temperatures ranging from 10 degrees to more than 100 degrees.

Special Requirements

Physically able to bend, stoop, and able to stand on feet for long periods of time. Physically able to meet and perform all job specifications. May be required to take random drug and / or alcohol tests, at no cost to the worker. Testing positive or failure to comply may result in immediate termination from employment. All testing and background check will occur after employment has started and is not a part of the interview process. May be required to submit a criminal background check, at no cost to the worker. Felony convictions that employer reasonably believes, consistent with current law, will impair the safety and living conditions of other workers or other individuals on the farm will result in immediate termination. Failure to comply with request for criminal background check may result in immediate termination of employment.
